This week we talked to Marina from Barcelona, Spain about her impressive collection of succulents.
WATER & LIGHT (W&L): HOW DID YOU GET INTO PLANTS?
Marina (M): My mother always had plants at home and I used to help her to water them. Since I had my own home, plants always have been present. My passion for succulents started about five or six years ago, and nowadays most of the plants that I have are succulents.
W&L: DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU GOT YOUR FIRST PLANT AND WHAT PLANT IT WAS?
M: My first succulent was a Graptopetalum paraguayense. I got it around ten years ago and I now have lots of her babies filling new planters at home.
W&L: WHERE DO YOU GET MOST OF YOUR PLANTS?
M: At the nurseries that specialize in succulents, garden centers or small local plant shops.
W&L: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLANT SHOPS TO VISIT?
M: I love every single shop that has plants and of course succulents. I find greater variety in specialized nurseries.
W&L: HOW MANY PLANTS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION?
M: I don’t know exactly the number but it is around one hundred and fifty.
W&L: WHAT ARE THE RAREST PLANTS THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION?
M: Maybe the Lithops, also called living stones. They are not easy to find here and they don't thrive so easily.
W&L: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLANTS?
M: That's a hard question. My favourite succulents are Sedum morganianum, Senecio rowleyanus, Astrophytum, and Graptopetalum, but I love all succulents! Besides succulents, I love Pileas and Monsteras.
W&L: WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT BEING A PLANT PERSON?
M: When you are a plant person you develop patience and the ability to be amazed by small things.
W&L: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU HAVE WITH PLANTS?
M: The main challenge that I have with every plant that I bring to my home is to find a perfect place for it. The place is really important for their development. The light, the sun, the temperature, all these factors will affect their growth and their health.
W&L: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR PLANT SPECIALTY?
M: I love to propagate my plants. By leaves, by cuttings, on soil, on water. I experiment as much as I can.
W&L: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 PLANT CARE TIPS?
1. Prepare a good soil mix. It is really important for succulent plants.
2. Make sure you know the needs of each plant. If it needs full sun or shade, if it wants lots of water or if it hates humidity, if it thrives in cold weather or must be kept indoors, and find a right place for them based on these needs.
3. Watch your plants, because they show you if they are happy or not.
