This week we chatted to Oskar (@plantthatplant) from Stockholm, Sweden about his plant collection.
WATER & LIGHT (W&L): HOW DID YOU GET INTO PLANTS?
Oskar (O): I’ve always thought nature is wonderful and interesting. It kind of grows from there. I study to be a landscape architect and grew up on the countryside so plants has been all around for a long time. But it didn’t get serious till last summer when I was working at a garden center.
W&L: DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU GOT YOUR FIRST PLANT AND WHAT PLANT IT WAS?
O: Hmm, I’ve had plants for a long time but didn’t realize the amazeness of them till last summer. I think it was the variegated monstera that was the ”gateway” plant for me.
W&L: WHERE DO YOU GET MOST OF YOUR PLANTS?
O: I buy them from friends, collectors, or on eBay/tradera.
W&L: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLANT SHOPS TO VISIT?
O: Stiftelsen Rosendals trädgård or Norr Mälarstrands blommor in Stockholm.
W&L: HOW MANY PLANTS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION?
O: Don’t know haha, maybe 50. I’ve been narrowing it down to focus on some of them.
W&L: WHAT ARE THE RAREST PLANTS THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION?
O: Hmm I guess the rarity depends on where you are located in the world but over here I think it would be: philodendron verrucosum x melanochrysum, Anthurium waroqueanum, Pink princess, Aglaonema pictum tricolor.
I’m picking up Monstera adansonii archipelago in a month. 😄🌱
W&L: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLANTS?
O: Hmmm, my favorite right now is the Ph. Melanochrysum since the new leaves are SO amazing.
W&L: WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT BEING A PLANT PERSON?
O: I learn something every day. The plant world is SO interesting both the people in the plant community and the world of plants itself. Also since I run a little plant shop myself, it is really fun to provide people with plants that they have been longing for a long time.
W&L: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU HAVE WITH PLANTS?
O: Creating good humidity during winter.
W&L: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR PLANT SPECIALTY?
I love philodendrons. Hmm maybe knowing what is wrong with a plant or why it isn’t thriving.
W&L: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 PLANT CARE TIPS?
1. Google your plant so you know what conditions it likes. Temperature/water/light.
2. Put your finger down 2cm in the soil of your plant, if it is moist -> don’t water it. If it is all dry and the pot feels light when u lift it up, drench it!
3. Don’t be afraid of taking away leaves that you don’t like. There will be new ones.
