Water & Light Plant Shop's Stephania Erecta Caudex (Potato) Plant. If all else fails, throw it in that air fryer your stepmom got you last Christmas. Do not eat. Free shipping on all orders.

Stephania erecta (Potato Plant) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia that loves a damp, dank environment with low to medium indirect light, perfect for a humid kitchen or bathroom. While these plants often take months to germinate and root, the outcome is worth the wait with its silver dollar-sized green leaves, similar to the Chinese money plant.

Our stephania erecta plant has been imported from Thailand as a bulb and is shipped domestically to you in that condition. Due to the fragile nature of the plant's stalks and leaves, the bulb must be grown into a plant by you. Expect this rooting process to take 3-4 months depending on the bulb and your environment.

Supplies are limited and not available year round, get yours while available.

  • 3-4" wide bulb with no roots or leaves. Upon arrival, fill a pot (preferably one without drainage) 1-2" larger with regular potting mix and nestle the bulb into the top of the soil. Wait patiently 3-4 months for bulb to germinate, root, and sprout.
  • Once foliage is growing, clean leaves with damp paper towel every 1-2 weeks to aid photosynthesis and stimulate growth. Check leaves and stalks for pests while cleaning. For more information on the importance of cleaning leaves, read our guide here.
  • If pests are found, remove with damp paper towel and use a mild organic pesticide in a spray bottle to coat the affected areas. More information on common pest problems can be found here.
  • Toxic to pets, contact your veterinarian in the event that sap, leaves, or any part of plant is ingested.
  • Mist liberally daily and water thoroughly once every 7-10 days, however avoid overwatering. You can read some fundamental rules of watering here.
  • Low to medium indirect light, avoid windows as they amplify the sun's intensity and create heat that may damage plant. You can find our plant placement guidelines here

For an overview on how we ship plants to you, see our guide hereAll items are shipped from Florida on Mondays or Tuesdays to allow for maximum continuous transit time while avoiding time spent sitting in warehouses, trucks, or other distribution points over the weekend. Depending on your location and the weather conditions across the country, we may be forced to hold on shipping until conditions improve as we have had items freeze while sitting in Chicago for four days and get delayed due to heavy holiday volume (Mother's Day, Christmas, etc.).  We will make every attempt to ship your item promptly on the very next Monday or Tuesday given that there are no anomalies in shipping conditions.

Items received in a damaged condition will be refunded immediately as we investigate the cause of the issue with the shipper.  Returns will not be accepted, please dispose of any unusable items after they have been refunded.
